Screens for Iron Ore Processing

Industrial screening is a widely used process for separating materials by size, ranging from 300 mm down to around 40 µm. Particle size separation efficiency decreases as material gets finer. Dry screening is generally limited to particle sizes above 5 mm, while wet screening is commonly deployed down to 250 µm and can reach as fine as 40 µm.

How Screening Works

At its core, screening involves presenting feed particles to a surface with uniform apertures or openings. Particles smaller than the aperture size pass through as undersize material, while larger particles are retained as oversize material.

Types of Industrial Screens

1. Vibrating Screens

700–1000 RPM

Rectangular surfaces with opposite feed and discharge ends. Eccentric rotating masses produce 1.5–5 mm vibration amplitudes, inducing feed stratification so fines migrate to the screen deck while coarse particles float to the top.

2. Inclined & Circular Motion

15° – 28° Slope

Single-shaft drives with unbalanced flywheels induce circular or elliptical vibrations. Mounted on an incline to allow gravity to transport material along the deck.

3. Grizzly Screens

50–300 mm Gaps

Inclined parallel steel rails or bars designed for heavy, coarse boulders. Primary application is scalping fines before primary jaw or gyratory crushers.

4. Banana / Multislope Screens

40° to 0° Variable Slope

High-tonnage screens with steep feed ends (40–30°) for rapid thin-bed screening of fines, transitioning to gentle slopes (0–15°) at discharge for precision near-size screening.

5. Horizontal Low-Head Screens

Low Headroom

Linear vibration on horizontal decks delivers superior sizing accuracy where vertical headroom is limited, though at lower TPH capacities than inclined screens.

6. Rotary Scrubbers

High Retention Washing

Cylindrical rotating drums with internal lifters. Designed to strip sticky water-soluble clays, silt, and deleterious coatings from ore before downstream crushing.
